It was the perfect poster. Unlike most fantasies which are stuck on the walls, I had this one stuck on my roof. It was that special. With its doors open, this gorgeous thing of a car looked all ready for flight. The car stuck on my roof was none other than the astonishingly beautiful Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. However, there were more reasons for my obsession with this car than just its looks. Introduced in 1954 as a two seat sports car with its one of a kind gull-wing doors the W198 as it was internally numbered, was pretty much based on the company's highly successful competitiononly 300SL or the W194. The road going version had the opportunity of being the first ever petrol car equipped with fuel injection directly into the combustion chamber. This innovation allowed a top speed of up to 260 km/h making the 300SL the fastest production car of its time.
