Volvo in India is known more for long-haul buses and trucks than cars, but everywhere else, it’s known as a safety leader. Such is the understated elegance of Volvo cars that If Audi is for people who find Mercs and Beemers too loud, then Volvo is for those who find even Audi too brash.Volvo’s first launches in India are the XC90 SUV and this, the E-Class-sized S80 sedan. Launched last year in Europe, the S80 is a very understated but handsome car, both inside and out. A fairly large sedan (over 4.8 metres long), it’s designed for long-distance comfort and stability, very different from its aggressive, determinedly sporty German ri vals. In India, it will be sold with a choice of three engines: two petrol and one diesel. The
cheapest (and almost instant choice) is the D5 diesel, at Rs 38 lakh (ex-Delhi). Its five-cylinder unit makes 182bhp and a very useful 400Nm of torque. It isn’t massively fast or eager, but it’s tractable and refined. Interestingly, it comes with four-wheel drive.
Option Two is the 3.2-litre sixcylinder petrol, with 238bhp and 320Nm.This one doesn’t have the option of 4WD and the third one is a 4.4-litre V8 at Rs 44 lakh (ex-Delhi), with its 315bhp. A sixspeed ‘Geartronic’ automatic gearbox is standard on the petrols, an option on the diesel.
