The next generation Octavia has everything going for it. Room at the rear is still a bit of a squeeze though. The new Octavia, is being sold in India as the Laura alongside the older Octy. Skoda has earned a reputation for incredibly efficient diesel engines and the new 1.9-litre diesel motor, using Pumpe Duse technology, just betters it. Producing 105bhp, bottom-end grunt is impressive, but it feels a bit stressed toward the red-line.
The black theme in the cabin looks classy with the black leather adding to it. A well built and ergonomic dash with plenty of gizmos occupies a place of pride. The aluminium-finish strip running across the dash gives it a hint of sportiness too. Rear passenger legroom is still poor.
The Laura probably justifies its price tag with the amount of equipment it packs in. A 6-CD changer, dual-zone climate control, multi-function steering wheel, auto headlamps and so on. Add six airbags, ABS, ESP and park-tronic and the Laura beats its competition by some distance.
Ride setup is a bit on the stiffer side, which however does aid the handling of this car. A well weighted and direct steering improves the experience. The six-speed auto ‘box is an absolute joy to
use and is quicker to the ton compared to the manual tranny.
Skoda has been around in India for sometime and has established a decent service network. The Laura is competitively priced considering the amount of equipment it comes with. With the Elegance the Laura just got more affordable.
