THE world’s largest auto show begins next week in Frankfurt. This year’s extravaganza will focus on passenger cars and clean technologies. ET Automania checks out the buzz about the concepts and the cars expected to be unveiled at the Internationale Automobil Ausstellung.
International media and blogs are revving with talk that Mercedes Benz is gearing up to showcase one of the largest line up of marquees — 19 models, no less! Many of them,of course, may just be some older models with a few rejuvenating nips and tucks, while others may be concepts. Some of the new launches expected from the German car maker is the Mercedes Benz ML 450 Bluetec hybrid and Mercedes Benz S 400 Bluetec. Based on the 2006 Mercedes-Benz S-Class,the hype around the Bluetec Hybrid is the company claim that it will use the “cleanest diesel in the world”.Another concept car likely to be in the limelight is the F700 concept, strapped with the 1.8 litre DiesOtto engine.
Troubled US car maker Ford will also unveil its latest 4x4 crossover Ford Kuga, based on the Ford iosis X concept car first showcased at the Paris Auto show last year. The car maker will also debut the Ford Focus, a facelifted version of its compact family car. Another model to look out for is the Ford Verve,a small concept car that’s expected to be a more fuel-efficient replacement for the current Fiesta. That’s said to be earmarked for a launch in many regions including Asia.
France’s Peugeot will be showing the Peugeot 308 Hybrid HDi a diesel-hybrid concept car. Also expected on display from the stable are the Peugeot 207 and Peugeot 308. Lexus’ itinerary for the Frankfurt Motor Show next month includes the European debut of the IS-F and the worldwide debut of this model, the 2008 Lexus GS 450h.
And if you have noticed the Aston Martin DBS in the remade Bond movie Casino Royale, check out the car in the flesh....err,metal, at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Audi will launch its Audi A3 convertible and Audi S4 new generation. The hybrid expected to be displayed by Audi is the A4 in its hybrid avatar. Others would be Audi RS6 and a refurbished Audi A8.Among the made-over and facelifted brigade are the next-generation Skoda Fabia Combi, Opel Agila, BMW 6-Series and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
There will also be a chance to see the concept car that’s been a hot-pick of international media: the Batmobile-like Mixim, an-all electric car. Christened the ‘baby hatchback’, this super-sexy marquee has a centrally mounted driver’s seat with two passenger seats fitted on either side.To add to the pizzazz, are the diamond cut-out doors and its video-game influenced controls are likely to make youngsters go crazy! Besides the four-wheeled wonders, the European commercial gas supplier Linde will demonstrate hydrogen fuelling, one using compressed hydrogen gas for a Mercedes Benz F-Cell and another with liquid hydrogen for a BMW Hydrogen 7
