AMW claims that the 2523 Tipper has been designed to suit a variety of heavy industrial purposes, from mining and quarrying to earth moving. The 4923 tractor, on the other hand, is targeted at long-haul and cross-country transportation. Both these 6x4 vehicles seem comfortable both on-road and off it. The Tipper can haul a maximum weight of 25 tonnes while the tractor claims it can handle an impressive 49 tonnes, depending on the capabilities of the trailer attached to it.
Both vehicles are powered by a 5880cc, six cylinder, inline Cummins 6BTAA engine (Euro II compliant), and can generate 235bhp @ 2500 rpm.
The power-steering makes handling easy; almost too easy, if such a thing is possible. Given how light it is, it’s easy to forget that you’re at the wheel of a monster. While steering is easy on your arms, the nine-speed 9S 75 ZF gearbox should give them enough of a work-out. Clutch control takes some getting used to (especially if you’re amateurs like us), but work it up beyond fifth gear, and you can get some genuine juice out of the engine. Payload-free, we managed to get it up to a respectable 80kmph.
Though the dashboard is all plastics, a fair amount of work seems to have gone into the cabin interiors, with comfortable bucket seats instead of simple bench seating.The adjustable steering column allows for more customized ergonomics. Longlegged drivers may have a problem though, as the seat can’t be pushed back beyond a certain distance, but that’s only because behind the seats is a berth for sleeping.There is an additional berth above that as well, but it struck us as a bit too close to the roof to really be of any use. The cabin comes complete with inbuilt FM player and powerful air-conditioning, both of which could do well to soothe those long-haul drives.
AMW says it is seeking to target a priceband that has not yet been tapped in the Indian market.“While most Indian-manufactured trucks are available in the pricerange of 10-15 lakh rupees, and most foreign ones in the range of 40-50 lakh rupees, we want to reach out to the price between these two i.e. the 15 to 30 lakh rupee bracket.We want to offer world-class trucks at Indian prices,”says R.C Mangal, Senior VP, Marketing, at AMW.
AMW’s integrated manufacturing facility at Bhuj in Gujarat, spread over 600 acres, can generate 10,000 units per annum.The Bhuj facility comprises an advanced assembly plant, steel stamping press, chassis rolling plant, fabrication unit, paint shop, crash barrier manufacturing unit and wheel rim manufacturing unit.The company is currently in the process of rolling out a dealership and spare-parts network that will span important highway routes across the country.
